Hi everyone:
Is there an easy way to do this? I have a couple of things I've put into my music library in Itunes, then synched to my ipod. To save space, I'd like to remove them from my itunes library. How can I do this without having the ipod delete the music on the next synch?

Thanks!

  • Tell your iPod not to sync music anymore. (ipod sync prefs in itunes) I don't recommend it though. What happens if/when your ipod dies? Or what if you decide you want some of that music back on your computer, it doesn't sync back, not by any means Apple has provided us. (purchased music does though) I recommend an external hard drive to make space on your internal, and another larger one for back up.

NOTE:'Backup' is the most important word in computing history. This means to have your data in AT LEAST 2 places.

If I wanted to add something to the ipod then, I'd need to do it manually, right?

If I move all of my music, or most of it, to an external drive, will the ipod delete everything when it next synchs?

      Thanks for your help

There are some threads detailing the process of using externals for iTunes libraries, so the short answer is, no. If you properly relocate your library, or more importantly your iTunes Music Folder (even to an external) your iTunes will behave as it always has. Synching would be normal. BUT if you delete your music you must turn off synching, or the next time you synch your ipod will see the music is gone and make the itself the same.
