Hey FOLKS --

I need to transfer a large quantity (if not all) of my songs from iTunes to an external HD.

But since I'm a DJ, I want to keep them in the playlists that I've created on iTunes.

Is that even possible?

I can't figure out how to even do the most basic export -- Someone please help me!!!

My MacBook PRO's HD is almost full & I cannot afford to have it crash on me @ an important gig.

~~~ Thanks so much for your help ~~~
  • are your playlist manual or auto?
    • I'm not sure -- what's the difference?
      I've created about 20+ playlists that appear on the left-hand side of the iTunes window.
      Not sure what you mean by "manual" vs. "auto".
      Also, I'm using a MAC (book Pro) -- If it makes any difference.
      • >I'm not sure -- what's the difference?
        Oh, and you're a DJ??
        Dude, once upon a time someone who did a job as a means of providing a service to others and income for themselves knew as much as possible about the tools of their trade.
        </snark mode>
        Anyway... I suggest you invest in a USB powered external drive and dedicate it to your music. Keep nothing else on it and 1) drag your iTunes folder over to one of the partitions you set up and 2) drag all of your music file - not the library - over to the other partition.
        Find $140 and get one of these: tinyurl.com/4tf67v
        They're solid and inexpensive. If needed you can play your tune sets from the external drive until your laptop crashes and things'll still be safe.
      • ... did you have to make them manually or did you make smart play lists?
        Your not exporting it your just moving it..
        smart play lists automatically grab that music that you tell it to. Wither it be a certain artist or genre.
        I'm going to assume that sense you didn't seam to know what I was talking about that you made your playlist manually.
        to move your music to an extra hard drive
        go into your itunes folder and drag it into the new hard drive
        then go into itunes and change under preferences> advanced> general, change the folder location to the folder on the external hard drive that you just moves the files to
        This should work either way but I don't know if it'll mess with your manual playlists.. If it does you'll just have redo them , I recommend making smart playlist next time
        • RE: Playlists
          I did it manually . . .
          so if you're saying that I have to categorize my songs ALL OVER AGAIN -- That really Sucks!!!
          I have over 12,000 songs that are SPECIFICALLY put into many different groups (i.e. I have 7 different categories for House Music, 4 types of Hip Hop, 4 types of R&B, Latin Music is split-up into 6 categories, Eight different categories for Reggae, etc.)
          There are still over 30,000 more songs that I have to add to my library, which is why I need to make room on my laptop.
          No SMART LISTS here -- that's good for lay people,, but I need precise organization (sorry to sound snooty).
          BONUS QUESTION:
          When I take these songs from iTunes & move them into my Ext. Hard Drive, do I lose all of the EQ settings that I set?
          • I don't know anything about the EQ settings.
            You might want to try to check out itunes.com and see if they have an answer for you on there about both questions.
            www.apple.com/support/itunes/
            actually support.apple.com/kb/HT1449 explains how to move your music on a mac.
            Dana
            • No you don't lose anything because your library AND your music are all intact. Be cautious you don't disassociate them or you will have some trouble. // Shout-out: So here you folks have advised moving the entire iTunes folder, are you all finding that works well as opposed to moving just the iTunes Music Folder? What happens to you if you launch iTunes when your ext HD isn't mounted? //
              OK DJ by 'automatic playlist' I think they are referring to smart playlists. This is definitely something YOU NEED, in conjunction with knowing how to create groupings and edit/add genres.
              Select a song or a group of songs, Command-I (ctrl for pc users) Now see genre and grouping, a grouping is a group of your own design. Genres are pre-made, but may not be comprehensive or specific enough. Think, classical music, or rock, these are genres, but these genres might include holiday music. So you might have a christmas grouping. The genre remains accurate, and you have now a classification that adds more refinement for the file.
              Next comes the reason for such classification. iTunes: File>New Smart Playlist.
              Now play with this till you get the hang of it. Consider a playlist that will automatically contain your classical music, excluding the christmas grouping. That way you can listen to classical music with out the estranged good king wenseslas in August.
