first go do your preferences > advanced > importing > import using (change this to mp3 encoder) > settings (apply the settings you want you want)

now, i'm not sure if m4a means that the file has drm on it. but, if it does, you'll need to strip that. the easiest way is to simply burn a disc and then re-rip it: the tracks will no longer have drm attached. and, if you've already changed your preferences, the files will now be mp3s.

if the files have no drm and you simply want to convert them, after you've changed your prefs, highlight the tracks you'd like to convert and, in the menu bar, find advanced > convert selection to mp3

    good luck

Ok it sounds like your trying to burn a CD not convert to mp3. Check to make sure you're burning audio CD's and not data or mp3 CD's. Under the Edit Menu select Preferences.

Click the Advanced tab and then Burning sub tab and check "Audio CD" then click OK

When you burn a CD, it will be in redbook format (the standard Audio CD format) and will play on all Stereos that have a CD player.

    Hope this helps!

I'm doing this process for a large playlist (thanks for the tips!) and every now and then I come across a song that can't be converted to mp3 because it's protected. I bought them from iTunes! Does anyone know what the deal with this is, and how I can get around it?
      Thanks!

Yes, songs bought from iTunes, can not be converted to mp3 due to the DRM (digital rights management) limitations.

There are supposedly programs out there that will do the deed for you, and I've also heard that burning the songs to an AUDIO cd and then re-ripping the CD to mp3's will also do the job.

does anyone know what software does this?

i think it's ridiculous... i paid for the cd but i can't put it on my ipod? that's retarded! this should be a seamless operation.

          any thoughts / suggestions?

            FYI --

If you're a DJ (who uses RANE SERATO SCRATCH LIVE) trying to spin MP4 files on your CD decks, it won't work; That's what my friends have told me.

I guess U can follow the directions listed above to make ur sh*t readable.

              anyone?

you must burn your purchased song to a CD. This will strip any protection from the file. Then import the CD back into itunes as MP3.
